MTG / Battle for Zendikar

Battle for Zendikar

Set Name: Battle for Zendikar
Overview: In this set, Magic returns to the popular plane of Zendikar. The battle between the the Eldrazi Titans and the allies rages on. The situation has grown desperate, the spawn of Ulamog have overrun much of the plane. The Gatewatch, a group of Planeswalkers led by Jace Beleren, rallies together to fight the Eldrazi, but the ancient Planeswalker-dragon Ugin warns them not to destroy the titans utterly, lest they unknowingly cause an even greater disaster.

Battle for Zendikar featured the release of the Expedition lands, a group of premium foil reprints of the most collectable lands from Magic’s history, including the prized fetchlands. This precursor to the Masterpiece Series was immensely popular. Gideon Jura, a member of the Gatewatch, received a powerful four mana incarnation; Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Gideon was a four of in several Standard decks as soon as it came out and quickly found his way into Modern as well. Ob Nixilis also recaptured his Planeswalker spark and received a new card; Ob Nixilis Reignited. New versions of Ulamog and Kozilek were also printed, rivalling the most powerful and expensive creatures of all-time.

Battle for Zendikar introduced several new mechanics; Awaken, Rally, Converge, Ingest, Processors, and Devoid. Awaken spells have an alternate Awaken cost. When this is paid, the spell has its normal affect and also turns a land into a creature. Rally triggers a unique effect whenever an Ally enters the battlefield. Converge is a mechanic that scales to the number of colors of mana used to cast the card, similar to Sunburst, but with more varied effects. Ingest creatures exile the top card of an opponent’s library when they deal combat damage. This effect pairs with processors, Eldrazi cards with abilities that are fueled by an opponent’s exiled cards. Finally, Battle for Zendikar introduced the Devoid mechanic, which makes cards with colored mana costs into colorless spells.
