MTG / Oath of the Gatewatch
|Set Name:||Oath of the Gatewatch|
Oath of the Gatewatch continues the story of the embattled plane of Zendikar. The Eldrazi Titan Ulamog and its spawn are ravaging the world, wiping out the allies who desperately fight for survival. The action centers largely around the devastated city of Sea Gate, where the beleaguered plane’s defenders make a desperate last stand. It’s up to the Gatewatch, a group of Planeswalkers led by Jace Beleren, to contain this unchecked evil. However, the demon Ob Nixilis, has other plans. After losing his Planeswalker spark and becoming trapped on Zendikar, he has been scheming for a way to reclaim his gift and escape the world which has become his prison. As the Gatewatch tries to trap Ulamog, Ob Nixilis subverts the power of the hedrons to regain his Planeswalker spark, and in the process unleashes the titan Kozilek.
Oath of the Gatewatch featured the second installment of the Zendikar Expedition lands, premium foil reprints of some of the most sought after lands from Magic’s history, including Wasteland. Oath of the Gatewatch also featured a host on new Eldrazi cards, like Thought-Knot Seer and Reality Smasher, with lower mana costs than the titans. These were so powerful that they caused Eye of Ugin to be banned in Modern.
The Colorless mana symbol was introduced in this set, denoting a mana cost that can only be paid with colorless mana, as opposed to generic mana. The set also introduced the Cohort mechanic, which allows two Allies to work together to produce an effect. Support is another Oath mechanic which puts a +1/+1 counter on a number of creatures up to the Support number. Finally the Surge mechanic allows you to cast a spell for an alternate cost, and often with an alternate effect, if you have already played another spell this turn.
